Update: Shooting in Pella

Pella — There was a shooting reported to the Pella Police Dept. this morning around 8:40 a.m. at 40 Brooks Circle in Pella.

The call to the Pella Police Department came in from that location. Pella Police Chief Robert Bokinsky indicates that the only injury to report at this time was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the suspect, William Shaw, of Fremont. Shaw was taken away, still alive by ambulance, but was later reported to have died of the self-inflicted injury.

According to officals, Shaw fled from the scene in Brooks Circle and was stopped by police near the Pella Water Treatment Plant (University and West 5th St.). A standoff between police and Shaw then took place for nearly 20 minutes before Shaw shot himself. During the standoff, officlals confirmed that Central College was on lock down, though many students had already left for winter break. Some staff and faculty members of the college were on campus during the time of the lock down.

The PPD is seeking a search warrant to look inside the suspect's vehicle. Law enforcement officers have searching the area all morning for possible witnesses and to ensure that the situation is over.

"These things don't just happen," Bokinsky said. The PPD's investigation into why this happened is ongoing. Bokinsky added that the situation cannot be fixed, but police want a better understanding of why it did.

The situation is "stable as it can get" at this point. As more information becomes available, we will pass it along as soon as we know.

Shortly before 11 a.m. the Department of Criminal Investigation arrived on the scene.

Look for more on this in the hours and days to come.
