Strong weather winter storm expected - UPDATED

Pella — The DM office of the National Weather Service held another conference call today at 2:30.  Below are the highlight of the call.  Worthy of mention is that a Winter Storm Warning will be issued for Marion County likely within the hour, and will remain in effect through most of the day on Thursday.  The storm system has decreased in speed, and the expected arrival has slowed by approximately 3 hours over what was expected yesterday (Tuesday).

  • System has slowed in speed since yesterday
  • 6” to 9” across central and southern IA
  • Thursday afternoon and evening
  • 1” to 1 ½” per hour
  • Moving SW to NE
  • Localized near white out conditions (below blizzard conditions)
  • Winter Storm Warning for most of Central IA for most of the day on Thursday for Marion County
  • Snow will be dry in nature and prone to being blown easily
  • Noon to 3 pm snow begins
  • 3 pm to 6 pm heaviest snow in Marion County
  • Snow continuing into Friday with an additional 1-2”
  • Winds shouldn’t be as severe on Friday
  • Only significant changes from yesterday’s call is the slowing of the system-has slowed approximately 3 hours
