Video: Retiring jailer recognized

Knoxville — A celebration was held this afternoon in honor of retiring jailer Rodney Johnson.

Johnson, who lives on a farm north of Melcher-Dallas, joined the Marion County Jail staff in 2005. In his retirement, he will help his son farm and drive a bus for Melcher-Dallas Schools.

"I didn't know it'd be so hard to leave," Johnson said of saying goodbye to his coworkers. He intends to stay in touch with those he can.

As a jailer, he has had the opportunity to get to know a variety of people. One thing he realized about the job is that it is sometimes easy to get involved with an inmate's life as well, whether you want to or not.

Sheriff Jason Sandholdt, standing in for Jail Administrator Scott Jerkins, presented Johnson a certificate of appreciation for his years of service. Video of the presentation accompanies this article.
