Musician Adam Frey at Central College April 23-24

Central College’s music department welcomes Adam Frey, one of the elite brass soloists in the world, Thursday, April 23, for a concert in Cox-Snow Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. He will join the Central College Symphonic Wind Ensemble and College-Community Band in concert Friday, April 24, in Douwstra Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.

Some of Thursday’s pieces include “Sonata for Euphonium and Piano” by Eric Ewazen; “Michelangelo” by Sigvart Dagsland, arranged by Frode Rydland; and “The Lord’s Prayer” by Albert Hay Malotte. “The Window Opens Toward the Ocean” by Jiro Censhu features Central junior Chris Ellerston from Fort Dodge on euphonium.

Friday’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble performance includes a trumpet concerto with soloist and winner of Central’s annual Concerto Aria competition, Justin Von Ahsen a sophomore from Belle Plaine. Frey will perform a solo during “Swimming the Mountain” by Allen Feinstein. “Bugler’s Holiday” by Leroy Anderson features Frey, Ellerston and John Roloff, a senior from Fairfield, on euphonium.

The College-Community Band will perform “Prelude Siciliano and Rondo” by Malcolm Arnold and “Bandology” by Eric Osterling, among other pieces.

Frey is an euphonium artist who travels the globe invigorating the international music scene with his talent. He will serve as a guest residency clinician during the week.

An Atlanta, Ga., native, Frey received musical training at the University of Georgia and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England. He has had more than 70 works composed or specifically arranged for him.

He serves as president of the Euphonium Foundation Inc., a non-profit established to promote the euphonium. He is artistic director of the International Euphonium Institute and is an adjunct professor of euphonium at Georgia State University and Emory University (Ga.).
