The Central College theatre and music departments have collaborated to bring you "Urinetown", one of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years. "Urinetown" is a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold. This Tony Award-winning musical is about a town not too different from our own, except for one major aspect of daily life: a water shortage has made private toilets illegal. Every day the hard-pressed citizens of the city stand in line to pay a fee for the public facilities. Anyone who can't pay the fee is sent to the horrible and mysterious Urinetown. To save his fellow citizens, Bobby Strong leads a rebellion against Urine Good Company.
Directed by Ann Wilkinson, the project features guest artist Edwin Griffith, vocal direction by Dr. Anne Petrie, and choreography by Valerie Williams. The orchestra will be conducted by Dr. Mitch Lutch.
Mr. Griffith has performed throughout the country, performing leading roles with the Nashville Opera Company, Bronx Opera, Berks Grand Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, Sarasota Opera, Belmont Opera, Natchez Opera, and Rockland Opera. He has also performed in concert with Nashville Symphony, Natchez Symphony, Delaware Symphony, Lancaster Symphony, West Jersey Chamber Symphony and Chorale, and Delaware Chorale. Since returning to Des Moines Mr. Griffith has performed with the Des Moines Choral Society, Des Moines Community Orchestra, Westminster Fine Arts Series, Plymouth Fine Arts Series, Ottumwa Symphony, Des Moines Symphony, and The Des Moines Metro Opera.
Most recently Mr. Griffith has been featured as “Arturo” in the Des Moines Metro Opera’s production of Lucia Di Lammermoor, as “Kaspar” in the Des Moines Metro Opera’s production of Amahl and the Night Visitors, as the Tenor soloist with the Des Moines Symphony in their performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, as the Tenor soloist with Westminster Fine Arts Series Performance of Mozart’s Requiem, and in recital as part of the Salisbury House recital series.
