Central College class of 2012 gives common space to campus

Pella — Each year the graduating class chooses a project to give back to Central College. The class of 2012 chose to create an environmentally friendly common space between Maytag Student Center and Central Market. The space will include pavers, several large rocks and a bubbling boulder.

When the class committee members set their fundraising goals for the project, they aspired to raise $2,000 and have 40 percent class participation. They surpassed both these goals by raising $4,800 and inspiring 51 percent participation.

The graduates also issued a challenge to the class of 1972 to match their $2,500. Terry ’72 and Emily Garvin ’72 challenged their classmates, as well, committing $2,500 if the rest of the class could raise the same amount.

In addition to these generous donations, Alan Tucker Trucking of Pella donated the large rocks to the project in honor of Tucker’s wife, Karen Kelderhouse ’77.

“The class of 2012 project committee has been a very practical and realistic group to work with,” said Mike Lubberden, director of facilities planning and management. “They all seemed to possess a good understanding surrounding the realities of design, construction and associated costs, as well as fundraising efforts.  It has been a pleasure working with this group of students on what will become a great tribute to the class of 2012 for years to come.”

The project is currently under construction and will be dedicated to the college on behalf of the classes of 2012 and 1972 during Homecoming and Family Weekend this fall.
