Pella —
Husband and wife duo Dukno Yoon and Heather Bayless will exhibit their works in the Mills Gallery from Nov. 12-Dec. 14. Yoon and Bayless studied in South Korea and work with metal structures.
Yoon explores the relationship of movement and the body by creating mechanical wings. “The contrast between metal structural form and natural feather, together with the repetitive and whimsical movements of fragile wings, provokes the imagination and evolves the intimate relationship between work and viewer,” said Yoon.
He graduated from Kookmin University in Seoul, South Korea, before moving to Ohio’s Miami University. Yoon received his M.F.A. from the metals program there in 2003. He has had two solo exhibitions of his mechanical wings in Seoul and at Miami University.
Bayless received her B.F.A. from Miami University before moving to Seoul to earn her M.F.A. in metalwork and jewelry at Kookmin University. She taught metalwork and jewelry design in Seoul for more than two years. Her work combines nature and art. “From tableware to jewelry, this metalwork focuses on natural form and pattern, and each piece integrates the concept of containment,” Bayless said. “Traditional materials and techniques are employed to create functional pieces with contemporary images.”
In 2010, Bayless and Yoon took positions at Kansas State University, teaching in the metals program.
In addition to displaying their work on campus, the pair will give an artist talk on Monday, Nov. 12 at 5 p.m. in the gallery. Their work can be seen during gallery hours, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
