K9 5K held at Edmundson Park

OSKALOOSA — Edmundson Park went to the dogs Saturday morning as the Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter held its inaugural K9 5K fund-raiser.

The event was rain-delayed from the previous weekend. While the sun hid behind clouds Saturday, dogs and their owners came out for a day of exercise in the outdoors. The K9 5K replaces the traditional “Woofstock” fund-raising event for the animal shelter.

Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter Executive Director Lindsey Sime said she was pleased with the turnout for the event, considering the circumstances.

There were close to 50 people signed up for Saturday’s event.

Besides the 5K run, there was one mile walk for those who are not runners but enjoy being outside with their pets.

The 5K run was a time event and winners will receive a prize. The one mile walk was not a timed event, so participants could complete the course at their leisure.

After the run/walk, participants could enjoy some food and refreshments at the Rotary Shelter in Edmundson Park.

Then, there was more fun for the participants — the Nine Lives Activity Pathway.

“This is the ‘Woofstock’ portion of the event,” Sime said.

Some of the Nine Lives Activity Pathway events include the popular radar run — an Oskaloosa police officer will use his radar gun to time dogs as they race down a track. Also, there will be things for dogs to do like jump through hoops, Sime said.
