Heat, drought don't harm pumpkin yield

Rural Columbia — As Halloween approaches, there should be no problem finding a good pumpkin this year. 

John Pierce with Pierce's Pumpkin Patch says this summer's high temperatures and dry conditions did not have an adverse effect on his pumpkins. He said pumpkins actually do better with less rain, and this summer, the right amount fell.

Heat does affect pumpkins, and while Marion County saw numerous 100-plus degree days this summer, it was not enough to harm the yield. Overall, he was able to gather almost the same amount of pumpkins he had last year.
