Summer's last gasp arrives

OTTUMWA — This week likely marks summer's last gasp as temperatures will rise well above normal and a slight chance of severe weather enters the picture.

No one is predicting anything major at this point, but forecasters do believe there's a 15 percent chance of severe weather Wednesday in a band running from the state's southwest corner to the northeast tip of Iowa. That's close enough to be aware of, but nothing to worry anyone much.

High temperatures Tuesday are forecast to be around 80 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Wednesday should be even warmer at 83. The average temperature this time of year is 60, and both days should be within a few degrees of the record high for the dates.

It won't last long. Temperatures on Thursday are expected to fall back to normal. They're going to keep falling Friday, when the highs will be only in the upper 40s.

The good news? Iowa isn't forecast to see the snow that has already hit parts of the country hard anytime soon.
