Area parents learn about ‘Safety at Home’

OSKALOOSA — These are things every parent should keep in mind.

At the Mahaska County ISU Extension building on Tuesday night, area parents heard from three people who know a thing or two about how to keep children safe. Mahaska County Parents as Teachers hosted the event, “Safe at Home,” which included Oskaloosa Police Lt. Craig Alexander, New Sharon Firefighter Kelly Mick, and Kitty Bogle of SIEDA.

Alexander talked to parents about instilling good decision skills in their children. He also focused on the importance of good communication between parents and their children. Knowing who their children’s friends are is also a good thing, said Alexander.

It’s important for children to know things like their home address at an early age, noted Alexander. This can be critical, should the child ever become lost. He also talked about what children should do if they encounter a stranger.

In talking to the parents, Alexander also pointed out that children look to their parents for guidance and suggested they watch a Youtube.com video, “Children See Children Do” for further explanation of that idea. He also said parents should watch the video without their children present.

Current seat belt laws and Internet safety were also discussed by Alexander. Literature on drugs was also provided to the parents.

Key elements of fire safety were also provided to parents attending Tuesday’s event.

Mick was also on hand to provide useful safety information. Mick focused on the importance off having functioning smoke detectors as well as why all homes need to have at least two ways out in the event of a fire. He also discussed other topics including the benefits of having carbon monoxide detectors and teaching children stop, drop and roll.

Bogle rounded out Tuesday’s event at the ISU Extension building with an informative talk on preventing child poisoning.
