Ten competitors gobble wings in speed eating contest at IHCC

CENTERVILLE — The Indian Hills cafeteria saw a crowd gather Wednesday at lunch time to witness five teams vie to eat 16 wings the fastest and take home a cash prize.

The event was put on by Marshall Brothers, a food distributor from Cedar Falls that provides food for the college. The company is rolling out four new sauces for their wings and wanted to have a kick off event. Lori Hoskyn, from Marshall Brothers, organized the event with Melissa Collins from Indian Hills. Collins helped publicize the event and get teams set up. Hoskyn and a group from Marshall Brothers prepared the food, judged and timed the contest and provided the prize money.

The first place team received $75, the second place team received $50 and the third place team received $25.

There were five teams of two in competition for the prizes. There was a team representing the faculty, the Ag Club,  the design tech students, the sophomore baseball players and the freshman baseball players. The gathered crowd cheered on their respective teams as they wolfed down the wings.

Each member of a team got one plate of 16 wings. The four new sauces were split between the 16, and included a firehouse buffalo sauce, a jamaican jerk sauce, a raspberry chipolte sauce and a teriyaki sauce. Each team member had to finish their own plate without help and there was no drinking allowed during the contest.

In the end, the freshmen baseball duo of Matt Burnham and Jacob Tepp walked away with first place in a time of 3:30. Second place went to the sophomore baseball duo of Luke Schneider and Adam Deneke with a time of 4:05, while third place went to the design tech duo of Christopher Strayer and Daniel Bennett with a time of 4:10.
