OSKALOOSA —
New Year’s Eve is a time to have fun, just as long as it’s safe fun.
It’s always a good idea to have a designated driver, said Mahaska County Sheriff Paul DeGeest. He noted that, because people who don’t normally drink alcohol do so on New Year’s Eve, it’s even more important to have a designated driver lined up for New Year’s Eve ahead of time.
DeGeest said a designated driver is one who stays completely sober and alcohol-free, noting that this is the safest route to take.
Although there may be some difference made by the fact that New Year’s Eve is on a Monday night rather than a Friday or Saturday night, DeGeest said one thing is for sure — the amount of people out partying on that night has diminished from what it once was in the past.
DeGeest said he believes people are more aware of stiff drunk driving laws these days.
In years past, DeGeest said he can remember having snow storms during New Year’s Eve. However, he said people got through these times without any serious accidents.
“Have a good time, but stay safe,” DeGeest said.
