Centerville home destroyed in early morning fire

CENTERVILLE — Firefighters from the Centerville Fire Department were woken early Tuesday morning for a house fire at the intersection of South 22nd Street and East Cottage Street, in the 1100 block of East Cottage Street.

The fire department was dispatched to the fire around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Officers from the Centerville Police Department were the first to roll on scene, and reported the house was fully engulfed in flames.

No injuries were reported from the fire. The home's one occupant was able to escape the blaze without injury. Centerville fire chief Mike Bogle credits smoke detectors for saving the male occupant's life Tuesday.

The house's attached garage with a vehicle inside had burned down by 3:30 p.m. Officers responding to the fire before the fire department arrived said that there were several small explosions, possibly caused by the car in the garage. Bogle says the occupant attempted to get the car out of the garage, but couldn't due to the amount of fire and smoke already present at the time.

The rest of the house was destroyed and the fire was under control by approximately 4:30 a.m., when fire trucks began heading back to the station.

The Centerville Fire Department was assisted by Mercy Ambulance and the Centerville Police Department at the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
