Oskaloosa man faces charges for incident at Public Works Building

OSKALOOSA — An Oskaloosa man faces several charges stemming from an incident at the Oskaloosa Public Works Building early Wednesday morning.

At 6:58 a.m., Oskaloosa police officers responded to the Oskaloosa Public Works building at 804 S. D St. in reference to an adult male that struck a closed garage door at the facility with his vehicle and then physically entered the building and started making threats to the Oskaloosa Public Works director. 

While en route, Officers were informed the suspect had left the building and was driving northbound on D Street.  The suspect, Bobby Lee Vandalen Jr., age 49, was located at the intersection of Sixth Avenue West and South D Street, after the suspect’s vehicle struck the vehicle of an off-duty Oskaloosa Police Officer. 

Vandalen was then placed under arrest and transported to the Mahaska County Jail . 

Vandalen was charged with the following: Harassment 1st degree, 3 counts - aggravated  misdemeanor;  Operating While Impaired 1st - serious misdemeanor; Criminal Mischief 5th degree - simple misdemeanor; Assault in violation of Individual Rights - aggravated misdemeanor; and Interference with Official Acts Causing Injury - aggravated  misdemeanor.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
