Away from the television Sunday? There's an app for that

LOS ANGELES — Film, as a medium, isn't new. Neither, at age 85, are the Academy Awards.

But apparently an old Oscar can learn new tricks.

Not everyone who wants to know which films win on Sunday night wants to spend the time camped out in front of the television for an awards ceremony that seems longer every year. There's an official Oscar app this year for people who would prefer to check in from time to time for an update instead.

The app, which is free for both iOS and Android devices, promises users the ability to watch the event based on cameras selected for them or, if they prefer more control, using the "director" setting to choose which cameras they see.

From the website:

From NOMINATIONS through OSCAR SUNDAY:

• Access info on nominees, movie trailers, exclusive videos, and photos

• Watch hosted specials on fashion and nominated films and actors

• Cast and share your virtual ballot with My Picks

On OSCAR SUNDAY:

• Watch your favorite celebrities as they walk the Red Carpet

• Follow the winners backstage in the Dolby Theatre

• See the stars mingle on Hollywood’s biggest night

On OSCAR SUNDAY, get the ultimate insider’s look with our exclusive Backstage Pass. We have over a dozen LIVE backstage and Red Carpet video streams to give you the best view of the action.  It’s the perfect companion to have when watching the show on ABC.

Follow the action in “Watch Mode” as our correspondents guide you through the ultimate Oscar Experience. If you’d prefer to call your own shots, switch to “Direct Mode” to control what cameras to view.

The app is free and, one would think, must have fewer words spelled completely with capital letters. Interested? It's on the Apple app store and Google Play, as well as the Amazon app store. You can find links to each by clicking here.
