The Iowa Soybean Association develops policies and programs that help farmers expand profit opportunities while promoting environmentally sensitive production using the soybean checkoff and other resources. The Association is made up of more than 8,000 farmer members and is governed by an elected volunteer board of 21 farmers. There are 97 producer members in Marion County.

Ankeny, Iowa — September 19, 2011

The Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) recently delivered a rolling tool chest, including a set of Craftsman socket wrenches, to soybean farmer Dan Sneller of Bussey. The prize is valued at $1,200. Sneller’s name was drawn from the soybean farmers in District 8 who had signed up for ISA membership or renewed their membership as part of a membership initiative, The Right Connections. Right Tools. Right Now.

Sneller was one of nine tool chest winners, one from each district across Iowa. Existing as well as new ISA members were eligible for the drawing, if they signed up and selected services and information they wished to receive from the tools ISA makes available to help make better decisions that can help grow productivity and profits.

In addition to the equipped tool chests, the membership initiative also included drawings for $500 Craftsman Tool shopping sprees, one of which was given to members signing up each month from April through July.

While the drawing for the tool chests has been completed, Iowa soybean farmers are still encouraged to get connected to ISA and gain access to the tools ISA offers its members. All Iowa soybean farmers who pay into the checkoff are eligible for ISA membership at no additional cost, but each farmer must sign up to indicate what services and information they are interested in receiving.

It’s all part of “Your ISA,Your Way” as the association focuses on “Expanding Opportunities. Delivering Results.”

NORTHEY COMMENTS ON IOWA CROPS - October 11
“The dry weather last week helped crops continue to dry down and allowed nearly half of the state’s soybeans to be harvested. Unfortunately, fire does remain a risk as the dry weather persists, so farmers should continue to take extra care while working in their fields,” Northey said. “Harvest remains slightly ahead of the five-year average and will likely continue to advance rapidly if conditions remain dry.”

Soybean Association Responds to USDA Crop Report
According to today’s United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) crop report, soybean production is forecast at 3.06 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the September estimate of 3.09 billion bushels and down 8 percent from last year. The average soybean yield for the United States is now estimated at 41.5 bushels per acre, down from the 41.8 bushels per acre predicted last month.

For Iowa, production is estimated at 467.6 million bushels, compared to 464.6 million bushels forecast in September. Iowa yield estimates are for an average of 50.5 bushels per acre, down from the September prediction of 51 bushels per acre.

Heat, Drought and Goss’s Wilt Can Affect Corn Yields in Iowa
Drought stress presents a much bigger potential problem than Goss’s Wilt for livestock producers... “Nitrate concentration or cyanide concentration in drought-stressed corn can be a serious threat to livestock use,” Steve Ensley said (of Iowa State University’s (ISU) Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine department). “Nitrate is converted to nitrite in the rumen, and nitrite converts blood hemoglobin to methemoglobin, which cannot transport oxygen to body tissues. Cyanide concentration, also known as prussic acid poisoning, works in a similar manner. In both cases, animals often die because of lack of oxygen.”
