Bereavement services expanding at Pella Regional

Pella — While there is no easy way to cope with grief, Hospice of Pella with Pella Regional Health Center is able to offer support and education. The bereavement coordinator calls each family who has suffered a loss with Hospice of Pella on a regular basis to see how they are adjusting to life without their loved one. Also, many people find comfort they are seeking within the various support groups or counseling offered:

Support Groups:

Bereavement Support Group

1st Thursday of the month, 6:30–7:30 pm

Lower Level of the Comfort House

This group provides a supportive environment where you can discuss topics related to your loss and find strength as you journey through grief.

Coffee, Conversation and Comfort

2nd Tuesday of the month, 9:30-10:30 am

Lower Level of the Comfort House

Not sure if a support group is for you? Need someone to talk to? Feel like a piece of you is missing and do not know what to do?

Good Grief & Games

3rd Thursday of the month 3:30–4:30 pm

Lower Level of the Comfort House

Join us for an afternoon of games, fellowship, fun and food. Enjoy the sound of laughter as we meet to play a variety of games. Supper on your own with group members afterwards is optional.

Moms With Hope

2nd Monday of the month, 7 – 9 pm

Lower Level of the Comfort House

Support and resources for moms who have experienced the death of a baby due to miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth or early infant death.

Workshops:

Decreasing Loneliness

October 13, 9 – 10 am

This workshop will focus on educating the public that the grief process is individualized and normal, developing ways to decrease loneliness through strengthening their support system or getting involved with activities and discussing ways to effectively work through grief.

Getting Through the Holidays

November 8, 10 – 11 am

This workshop will focus on how participants can work through their grief during the holidays, enjoy memories and have the memories of the deceased be a part of the holidays, if desired. Many people have a need to talk about their loved one during the holidays rather than avoid this topic. This is a healthy approach to the grief process.

All support groups and workshops will be held in the lower level conference room at the Comfort House, 505 Union Street. No need to preregister.

“We’re offering workshops in addition to the support groups in order to educate the public on topics of grief,” said Kim Pickett, bereavement coordinator in Hospice at Pella Regional Health Center. “This option may also be a good opportunity for those people who do not wish to commit to a support group on a regular basis but are still seeking information.”

Counseling is also available for anyone, of any age, trying to cope with death and loss. Sessions are approximately ½-1 hour and are scheduled on a case-by-case basis by patient need and counselor recommendation.
