Pella —
A “rough day” doesn’t begin to describe what care givers and family members who are caring for those with Alzheimer’s, or other forms of dementia, suffer through each “day”. Even if your parent or family member lives in a Memory Care facility, dealing with the stresses and issues which come up every day can be extremely difficult. There are, however, many ways to make it through this journey successfully. One of the most beneficial is joining a support group. Studies show that healing, understanding, and knowing that you are not alone can make a difference in the well-being of family, caregivers, and friends of those suffering from memory loss.
The Memory Loss Support Group meeting at Vriendschap Village is providing a place for families to do just that. Dee Smith, facilitator, has been meeting with families at Vriendschap Village since the fall of 2011. The group meets on the 2nd Monday evening of each month. Much of the hour and a half is spent sharing various issues which come up and discussing ways to handle those issues. Frequently, a special expert will come and share their insights and ideas to help the families cope. This group is available to everyone and is an open group, which means you can come to one meeting or to all of them. The topic is different each month. The next group meets Monday, Feb. 13, 6:30 p.m. in the Independent Dining Room at Vriendschap Village, 2602 Fifield Road, located on the west side of Pella. Dr. Amanda Johnson, Psychologist, Poweshiek County Mental Health Center, will be speaking on coping with personality changes and paranoia. Then on March 12, Kelly Van Hyden from Hospice will join the group.
