Pella —
On Saturday, November 10, at 2 p.m. at the Pella Public Library, guest speaker Patty Rowland will present “The History and Evolution of Pressing and Ironing.”
Patty has been collecting antique and vintage irons over the years and has acquired an interesting array of many types of irons, including pan irons, mangle boards, slickenstones, goffering irons, box irons, sad irons, charcoal irons, fluting & crimping irons, fuel irons, early electric irons, as well as a variety of specialty irons and iron accessories.
Irons, as necessary household implements of yesteryear, were produced for every trade and every category of clothing. In an era when everything had to be ironed -there was an iron for every purpose. Eager to share her passion for these utilitarian devices, Patty’s presentation will focus on the evolution of ironing devices through-out history - from the use of Chinese pan irons in the first century B.C. to ~1000 A.D. and the use of slickenstones by the Vikings to the Scandinavian mangle boards in the 1500s, followed by more “modern” irons that your grandmother may have used. A display of and discussion about many of the irons in her collection will follow the presentation.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Library at 628-4268.
