Pella —
The crisp, cool weather right now offers a great time to take a hike…the Volksweg Trail offers the perfect spot for your next outing.
The “Volksweg,” a Dutch word for “a People’s Path,” refers to the thirteen-mile paved biking and hiking trail in the lake area. The earliest sections of the path, located below the Red Rock Dam, were completed in the early 1980s with later expansions occurring in the 1990s. Winding along the lake’s north side, below the dam and into the City of Pella, you can access the Volksweg from many spots along its route for a short “stretch of the legs” or for an all-day excursion. The scenery along it offers a treat for the eyes: lush forests, rolling prairies, and beautiful lake and river views grace the path along its route. Several nature trails also link to the Volksweg for side trips off the paved path.
Bring a camera or pair of binoculars to spot wildlife, or look for geocaches hidden along the trail and in nearby parks. Binoculars and GPS units are available for free checkout from the Red Rock Visitor Center or Corps office (south side of dam).
Lake area trail sections are marked every half mile to help you track your mileage. You can also pick up a trail map at the Red Rock Visitor Center (south side of the dam) or find it online at www.lakeredrock.org.
Don’t forget to grab a jacket on the way out the door! For more information about the Volksweg Trail or Lake Red Rock, contact the Corps office at (641) 828-7522 or (641) 628-8690.
