The Pella Community High School Jazz Band I and Jazz Band II performed at the Iowa Music Association State Jazz Contest held at the Pella High School Auditorium Saturday, January 13th. Jazz Band I, under the direction of Ben Thompson, performed three compositions: Tall Cotton by Sammy Nestico, Sultry Sunset by Duke Ellington, and Blue Bossa by Kenny Dorham. This is the 32st consecutive year that the Jazz Band I ensemble has received a “Superior” rating at the festival. Jazz Band II, under the direction of Kim Benson, also performed three works: El Ritmo de Vida by Bob Washut, All Blues by Miles Davis, and Flight of the Foo Birds by Neal Hefti. This is Jazz Band II’s first appearance at State Contest in over a decade, and the band recieved a rating of Excellent.
Jazz Band II performs next at the Simpson College Jazz Festival on Friday, January 25.
Jazz Band I will next perform at the Urbandale Jazz Colloquium on Saturday, February 2.

Sadler honored with remaing of cottage
A retirement party was held last Thursday evening for Patsy Sadler honoring her for her 36 years of service as the Pella Historical Society Village Director. In honor of Patsy and Dean's contributions to the society, the Historical Society Board renamed her former workplace as the 'Sadler Cottage'. Approximately 180 well-wishers attended the open house.
