Pella Christian Speech Team earns 14 I’s at District Individuals


Pella Christian High School continued their successful speech forensic season at the IHSSA’s District Individual Events competition on Saturday, February 27 at Tri-Coiunty High School in Thornburg, Iowa. Of the 16 individual events, 14 received I’s and a spot at the state competition on March 13 at Cedar Rapids Prairie High School.

The Iowa High School Speech Association (IHSSA) had over 40,000 students participate across the state at the District level. The Pella Christian Team is coached by Marlo Van Peursem and Helen Luhrs. The school’s Large Group one-act, Orphan Trains, just returned from the All-State Festival at ISU where they were selected as only one of eight high schools in Iowa to perform--and returning home with the “Critics Choice” Banner for the top one-act of the festival.

District Forensic Speech students earning I’s in Interpretive Prose were Chess Van Wyk, Mara Keuning, and Kate Van Gilst while Shayla De Jong earned a I in Poetry. Literary Program students receiving I’s include Michaela Martin and Kate Van Gilst.

Students in Acting also advancing are Emily Visser, Amber Attema, Jalissa Morgan, and Jenna Fynaardt while those in Musical Theatre solos were Nicole Vand Zande and Chess Van Wyk. Storytelling events earning I’s were Julie Jansen and Jenny Fynaardt.

Receiving II’s at Districts in Interpretive Poetry were Amber Attema and Kim Van Zee.
