Pella —
American Legion Post 89, in Pella, recently completed its Oratorical Contest entitled High School Oratorical Scholarship Program “ A Constitutional Speech Contest”.
This is a two part contest open to any high school age student. The first part consists of an 8-10 minute prepared oration based on The United States Constitution, with emphasis on duties and obligations of a citizen to our government.
The second part is a 3-5 minutes presentation on an assigned topic drawn from four possible topics. The student has 5 minutes to prepare before making his/her presentation.
The topic drawn for this contest was Amendment 24: abbreviated is, the right of citizens of the United States to vote in any primary or other election--- shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State by reason of failure to pay poll tax or any other tax.
The winner of this year’s contest was Emily Witt, the daughter of Lori and Jon Witt.
Emily is a senior at Pella Community High School.
Emily will next compete in the American Legion’s 6th District Contest, (date and location to be announced). She will be competing with the winners from the other 5 counties which comprise the Legion’s 6th District.
Post 89 Congratulates Emily and wishes her well as she competes in the District and beyond.
