Marion County Jail passes inspection

Pella — The State Department of Corrections recently performed its annual inspection of the Marion County Jail. The facility's review was positive. Jail Administrator Scott Jerkins said there were no issues nor any suggestions made by the inspector, in regard to the jail.

The facility opened in December 2006. It was constructed with money raised from the passage of a $5 million bond. Six percent of Marion County voters took part in the bond referendum that approved the jail's construction. A new jail was sought due to threats of shutting down the former facility, located in the basement of the courthouse, because it did not meet state standards.

Jerkins said nearly everything that takes place inside the jail is documented. For the most part, the facility runs smoothly. Today, Marion County continues to house inmates from Warren County. The jail can hold up to 59 inmates, and has averaged in the low to mid thirties for the past several months.

“I do credit the staff,” Jerkins said. “They all do an exceptional job.”

The jail employs 10 full-time jailers and four part-time. Jailers have to attend a 40-hour class within their first year of employment and must complete 20 hours of continuing education each year through the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy.

The jail will be inspected again in January 2014.
