Positively Pella Community Calendar of Events

Pella — September 27 Families First Presents "Early Childhood Parenting Made Fun" 5 Week Class  

Free class! Free meals! Free Childcare! This class teaches about how to make parenting fun for you and your little one(s). Class begins September 27 from 6-8 pm at Trinity Reformed Church. To register or for questions, contact Jodi Bokhoven, Director, at 641-628-8331 or famfirst@iowatelecom.net. Registration information can be found in the Town Crier or brought home from your child's school.





September 27 Fall Soup Supper

Soup, sandwiches, dessert, and drinks will be served at the First Baptist Church (709 Independence) from 4:30-6:30 pm. Freewill donations will benefit mission trips. For more information contact Jackie Harvey 641-628-4453.





September 27 Gary Vermeer Memorial 5k Run/Walk

Adult Run/ Walk will start and end at the Vermeer Global Pavilion (2110 Vermeer Road East, Pella) at 5:45 pm. $20 registration includes t-shirt and portion donated to Wounded Warriors. Kids 100 meter fun run (free, for kids ages 12 and under) will be held at 5:20 pm- all children participants will receive a medal. September 27 Bingo Night

Have fun playing Bingo! Proceeds benefit St. Mary's Catholic Church. Children 10-17 welcome with an adult. It is held every Thursday from 6:30-9 pm at 1203 Peace Street (old church). Game prices range from $0.50 to 2.00 a game or $17 for a game packet. For more information contact Peggy Moriarity at 641-628-1549.






September 27 Tim Tripp to host Town Hall Meeting

Iowa Senate District 40 Candidate Tim Tripp will host two town hall meetings (the second on October 4) to discuss his vision of healthy communities, healthy schools, and healthy Iowans. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. Tripp is a small business owner in Pella, IA who serves on the School Board. From 7-8:30 pm at the Pella Public Library.



  

September 27 Central College presents Troubador Band

Masters of Haiti's acoustic twoubadou (troubadour) style Ti-Coca and Wanga-Nègès will be visiting Central College from Sept. 25-29. Performance on the 27th from 7:30-8:30 pm in front of the Chapel at Central College. Open to the public and free to attend.





September 28- 29 The Sanctuary presents 24 Hour Prayer Event

Come anytime to pray for yourself, others, and the community. You can pick any room to pray in along with a prayer brochure to guide your way. Will start noon Friday September 28 to noon Saturday September 29. The Sanctuary is located at 717 Main Street. Call 641-628-1664 with questions, or visit thesanctuary@iowatelecom.net .





September 28 Pella High Homecoming Chili Tasting Contest

YOU ARE ALL INVITED TO "Strike up" YOUR TASTE BUDS! Come and Support the "Best Tasting Chili Contest" hosted by the Pella High Marching Dutch, and various community sponsors donating and mixing up their own chili recipes. Tasting will be held Friday, September 28 during Pella High HOMECOMING from 5:45PM to 7:30PM at the PHS Football Stadium, Southwest end, inside the gate. Cost is $5 to Taste & Vote for your favorite chili. Proceeds will help fund an equipment trailer for the Pella High Marching Dutch. The Winner will be announced after 3rd quarter of the Homecoming game, and will win a trophy and the highly acclaimed "Best Tasting Chili at PHS Homecoming" award.




 

September 28 Pella Opera House presents "Mary Poppins" 
The Pella Opera House will be showing the film "Mary Poppins" on Friday, September 28th at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 per person; $15 for families. Audience participation is encouraged, so please join us in "taking a spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down!"  





September 28 Friday Night Worship at Redeemer Church

Ever wanted to visit another church but not miss your own Sunday service? September 29 Lake Red Rock Volunteer Work Day

Volunteer at Lake Red Rock to celebrate National Public Lands Day! The Corps of Engineers is looking for volunteers to help pick up litter along the shoreline and stain picnic tables in the campgrounds. Activities will take place from 8:00 a.m. until noon.  Your help will keep the parks looking great for the future. September 29 Oktoberfest on the Molengracht Plaza

September 29 Winemaker's Wine Dinner

September 30 St. Mary's Catholic Church's Fall Festival

Join us for carnival games, a cake walk, face painting, a country store, music, wine and beer tasting, prizes, food, and a 'punkin chunkin' contest.  Rain or shine!  11 am to 3:30 pm. Tickets will be sold at the door - - prices for food and events will vary.  Proceeds will go to our building fund. Please bring ID for alcoholic beverages tasting. October 1-5 City of Pella Fall Clean-up Week

Fall clean up week is a means for Pella residential customers to dispose of bulky items that do not fit inside a garbage tote. Participation in clean-up week is limited to those who have been issued a City of Pella authorized tote (dark blue with windmill stamped on the sides). Pick up will occur on normal collection date- items must be placed on the curb side at least four feet from your tote and prior to 7 am or they will not be picked up. Most household items may be set out for collection, but electronics, appliances, and remodel/construction debris are banned from this program. October 1 Pella During the Civil War

The battles of the Civil War were fought far from Iowa, but there was plenty of controversy and activism in Pella and Marion County.  Who were the Copperheads and what did they want?  Was there an Underground Railroad stop in Marion County?  When and why was John Brown in this area? Dr. Ron Rietveld will answer these questions and share more of the interesting facts he has unearthed in his research about Pella during the Civil War. 7-8 pm at the Pella Public Library.





October 2 Pella Opera House Presents Gaelic Storm

Gaelic Storm returns to Pella with Celtic music that hearkens back to the traditional music of Ireland, adding in modern sounds and influences from American rock and pop as well as music styles from around the world. 7 pm. October 3 Healthiest State Walk

Last year more than 291,000 Iowans walked one kilometer to support the Healthiest State Initiative. This year, we would like to have even more! October 3 Come! Celebrate Christmas Rehearsals Begin

Singers in the community are invited to join together at First Reformed Church for Come! Celebrate Christmas, a concert of worship with many Pella-area voices. Rehearsals begin Wednesday October 3 from 7:30-8:30 pm (weekly rehearsals); concerts will be Saturday December 15 and Sunday December 16. October 3-6 Dead Man's Curve by Robert Leonard

A provocative new play will debut on Oct. 3 when Theatre Central presents "Dead Man's Curve." Based on the book "Yellow Cab", written by Iowa author and local radio personality Robert Leonard, the piece has been adapted and directed for the stage by Ann Wilkinson. This is the fifth new piece in a series of world premiers created by Theatre Central since 2008. Please note: Strong language and adult topics. 7:30 PM each night at the Kruidenier Theatre Bldg. Tickets: $5 General Admission; $3 Students and Senior Citizens; FREE with a Central ID.

Red and Blue Vocal and Instrumental Combos Concert, Cox-Snow Recital Hall, 8 pm.





October 6 Ulrich's Drive One 4 Your School Fundraising Event

Raise money for your school by driving a new car! $20 donation to Pella Schools for test driving a new Ford or Lincoln, $10 Donation for each additional test drive in the new 2013 Ford Escape, and $5 donation for wearing school colors to the event. Benefits go to Pella Public and Pella Christian Schools. Free to participate and has historically raised over $33,000 in the past. 8 am- 5 pm. October 6 Make A Wish Meal & Auction

Come to the Pella Memorial Building for an auction, raffle, and free-will donation meal to raise money for the Make a Wish foundation. 6 pm.





October 7 Empty Cradle's "A Walk to Remember"

Empty Cradle supports and connects families who have lost a baby due to miscarriage, stillbirth or infant death. Family and friends are invited to join us for a time of remembering these precious babies. We will have a candlelight memorial service at 2 pm at the Memorial Center followed by a short walk, balloon release and refreshments.
