Pella —
In the past year in Iowa alone, 98 senior financial fraud incidents were reported. To prevent and reduce this growing problem, Vriendschap Village Retirement Community of Pella will present “Preventing Elder Fraud and Financial Abuse” sponsored by MidwestOne Bank on Friday, October 26 at 2 p.m.
Christine Wilcox from MidwestOne Bank’s Oskaloosa branch will lead the session and Pella’s Chief of Police, Robert Bokinsky will be on hand. They will discuss statistics, how to protect yourself and family members, and how to recognize senior financial fraud. They will also offer a question and answer session following the presentation.
The MetLife Mature Market Institute, in conjunction with the National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the Center for Gerontology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University estimates that the annual financial loss by senior victims of financial abuse in the US is at least $2.6 billion dollars. Most perpetrators of such financial abuse are typically not strangers; rather they are people who have gained the trust of the senior.
The public is invited to this event at 2602 Fifield Road in Pella. For more information on this event, please call 1-641-628-8260.
