Red Rock drowning update: Divers on scene now

Lake Red Rock — A team of volunteer Midwestern divers is at Lake Red Rock now as the search for the body of 25-year-old Derek Long continues.

Long drowned Sunday afternoon after diving into the lake to rescue a six-year-old child. The child was wearing a life vest and was eventually rescued by an officer with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The DNR was on the water, not far from Long's boat, when the call came into the Marion County Sheriff's Office at 3:25 p.m. on Sunday, July 22.

The DNR was explaining the situation to members of the dive team upon their arrival. Approximately 25 volunteer divers came, some of them with trailers filled with diving equipment.

Teams of divers are jumping off of a barge owned by the Red Rock Marina to search for Long. Several family and friends remain at the Marina, many of them with their vehicle windows bearing messages of love for Long.

Marion County Sheriff Ron Goemaat and members of his department remain on the scene, as well as Marion County Emergency Management Coordinator Jeff Anderson. Pella Ambulance has been on the scene as much as the Sheriff's Office. Responders have been on the scene today since 6:30 a.m., after spending all day Monday.

"We're going to be here until he is found or the search is called off," Pella Ambulance Director Doug Polking said. Agencies involved in the search thus far have included the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Knoxville Fire and Rescue, Pella Fire, Pella Ambulance, Marion County Emergency Management, Pleasantville Fire, Department of Natural Resources, Mercy Two Helicopter, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and the Iowa State Patrol.

We'll keep you posted as the search continues.
