Pella —
The Pella Historical Museum Gift Shop offers a unique selection of gifts for holiday shoppers.
The Museum Gift Shop has many typical Dutch items of delft including the always popular teapots, coffee grinders, and cups and saucers. Children’s tea sets at various prices are a great collectible gift for a special granddaughter. Several sizes of Sinterklaas figurines are wonderful reminders of Dutch Christmas traditions. The popular cookbook, “A Taste of Pella” is full of recipes submitted by members of the Pella Historical Society and Dutch recipes from old Pella cookbooks. Each section divider features Pella history and page fillers are memories which residents have of Pella past. Another favorite for the cook on your list is the denim apron embroidered with the words, “Eet Smakelijk”, with matching potholders. Wooden shoes painted in beautiful Hindeloopen painting by Sallie De Reus are a one-of-a-kind gift. And we still have posters of the record wooden shoe dance of the 75th Tulip Time.
Books are popular gifts for the hard to buy for people on your list. The museum gift shop has a large selection of books on Pella history. Books compiled by Murt Kooi, Clarence Buerkens and Loren Vander Zyl contain great stories of Pella past. Iowa Spaces, Places and Faces is a delightful hard cover coffee table book that features all 99 counties and many towns throughout Iowa. Several books about The Netherlands by various publishers are interesting to those interested in their Dutch roots. Children’s books with beautiful illustrations tell Dutch stories such as Wynken, Blynken and Nod, Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates, Boxes for Katje, Hanna in the Time of the Tulips and many more.
Celebrate Iowa is the newest book by Carson Ode that documents 103 different Iowa festivals including the Pella Tulip Festival. When One Room Fits All by Helen Boertje details the country school experience in Marion County, a wonderful gift for anyone whose education was in a one room school. There should be a new book coming soon by Murt Kooi also.
Remember that all purchases in the museum gift shop are tax exempt and help fund the Pella Historical Society.
Gift certificates for memberships in the Historical Society are perfect and will allow for free admission to the Historical Village and Vermeer Mill throughout the year. Dutch Day Camp is a great gift for the 4th and 5th graders on your list; contact the Business Office for a certificate. Gift certificates for tours of the Historical Village, Vermeer Mill and Scholte House are available in the Interpretive Center.
If you are looking for a unique gift, stop by the Pella Historical Gift Shop in the Interpretive Center adjacent to the Vermeer Mill, 714 East 1st Street in Pella.
