Accident claims life

Pella — An accident last night claimed the life of an 84-year-old Pella man.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, Christopher Lyle, 31, of Pella, was driving his 2005 Dodge Caravan eastbound on University in Pella, east of Broadway. A pedestrian, identified by the Patrol as Gilbert Paul Vanderwal, 84, of Pella, entered the road at a cross walk when the vehicle struck him.

This occurred at a marked cross walk at a lighted roadway. The accident occurred around 6:16 p.m. It was raining and the driver stated he did not see Vanderwal in the cross walk, due to rain and the glare from the lights.

Vanderwal was transported to the Pella Medical Center. It does not appear as though Lyle has been charged.

A message has been left with Trooper Stine of the Iowa State Patrol, who is handling the investigation. If we receive more details, we will pass them on.
