Ruth was born in Meservey, Iowa, the only child of Kathryn (Gruis) and Reverend Eilert Dirks. She attended Central College in Pella, Iowa, where she met John Newton Allen; they married on August 12, 1944. After John’s WWII service they farmed near Coin, Iowa, and later lived in Roseburg, Oregon, Clarinda, IA and Pella, IA. Ruth taught music, Latin, English, and history over the years, and finished her career in Pella as a high school librarian. After retirement she traveled, did volunteer work, gardened, and enjoyed her family. In recent years her interests were limited by the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease, which she faced with courage and grace.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, and her son Samuel James Allen. She is survived by daughters Kathryn Herrema-Johnson (and Don Johnson) of St Paul, MN, and Carol Campbell of Manchester, three grandchildren, and one great granddaughter.
The family wishes to thank the extraordinary staff at Orchard Pointe for their attentive care the past few years.
Memorials may be made to the Friends of the Manchester Library Endowment Fund, PO Box 128, Manchester, WA 98353.
A private service is planned for later this year, in Iowa.
