Pella —
Graveside services were held Tues. Oct. 9, at the National Memorial Cemetery, Phoenix, Arizona for William G. VandenBerg who passed away Peacefully with his wife by his side and after a long term illness and brief stay at Sherman House in Phoenix. Pastor Patrick O. Sullivan of the Scottsdale Bible Church officiated at the service.
He is survived by his wife Geri McGirt VandenBerg of the home and one son Scott VandenBerg of Pella, Iowa, two stepsons Rodney and Chris McGirt of Scottsdale, AZ and one stepdaughter of Greensville, SC. He is also survived by two grandsons Andy and Nick Aldridge of Iowa and six stepgrandchildren.
William known to his friends as “Bill” was born June 23, 1927 in Pella, Iowa the son of Gerritt H. VandenBerg and Emma DeHaan VandenBerg who preceded him in death. After graduating from Pella High School, he joined the U.S. Navy. After returning to Pella, he entered into a business partnership with his father an Electrical Contractor Business, VandenBerg Electric. During those years he became business partners with a dear friend, the late Robert Van Vark where they were involved in several business ventures. While continuing the business partnership with the late Robert Van Vark, he later sold VandenBerg Electric and moved to Scottsdale, AZ where he started up an Electric Wholesale Business, Desert Electric Supply, Inc. in Mesa, AZ. He retired from that business in 1999.
“Bill” was a long time member and enjoyed attending Scottsdale Bible Church in Scottsdale. In his spare time and before becoming ill, he enjoyed traveling, playing golf, bike riding, going to AZ Cardinals games with his wife as well as the Phoenix Suns games. He also looked forward to playing cards with his Iowa friends when they came to town each year. Bill loved his Pella friends and family and spoke of them often. He loved telling funny stories about them and himself while living there. “Bill” did not give up, he was just worn down and ready to go home to be with God.
In leiu of flowers the family requests memorials to be sent to Hospice of The Valley - 5801 E. Mayo Blvd. Phoenix, AZ 85054.
