Pella —
Red Rock Lake Association announces the Gladys Black Eagle Cam project as a collaborative effort to enhance knowledge about eagles in the Red Rock Area. As previously reported in The Chronicle, the eagle cam will provide live online streaming video and become an educational opportunity.
The camera will provide audio and video relating to the eagle family structure and daily activities. Nest building, courtship, egg laying, chick development and the fledging of the young eagles will be viewable from the camera. Activity at the nest will begin in late October and continue through courtship in January, egg hatching in February and concluding with the birth of the eagle chicks. Educational videos are planned for documenting eagle activity in the nest.
The nest that the camera is watching has produced two eagle chicks in the past year and the parents have been in the Red Rock area for over six years. As the project has progressed, the family of eagles has kept a watchful eye on the nest.
The eagle cam and educational videos will be accessible via the Red Rock Lake Association’s website at www.redrocklakeassociation.org.
Gladys Black, for which the camera was named after and known as “Iowa’s bird lady”, was a resident of Pleasantville and is a well-known ornithologist and naturalist.
Red Rock Lake Association is working with educators, curriculum directors and other interested parties to spread enthusiasm, learning opportunities and information about the camera.
For more information contact Ron Huelse at 641-842-6282
A presentation, program overview, discussion of educational opportunities and recognition of contributing sponsors will be held Thursday Nov. 3 at 3 p.m. in Graham 1 at Central College.

Staff from the University of Minnesota's Raptor Center will share amazing details about how these birds "make a living." After that, more live birds await you as Environmental Educator Mike Havlik presents programs about owls, hawk identification and conservation. Other event highlights include wildlife photographer and author Ty Smedes, an environmental fair, wildlife photographer Ron Huelse, and nature crafts. Travel to the Red Rock Dam to spot eagles fishing and flying in the wild. Volunteers will be on hand with spotting scopes in the North Tailwater Recreation Area to assist you.
