Butterfly Count at Neal Smith NWR

Pella — Would you like to learn more about the beautiful butterflies found on the refuge in the summer? Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge would like to invite you to join us for our annual butterfly count on Sunday, July 15, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.  This free event is open to the public and volunteers of all skill levels and experience are welcome to join us.  Pre-registration is encouraged.

During the count, a naturalist and other butterfly experts will guide volunteers around a paved, two-mile trail and teach participants the intricate differences of butterflies on the prairies. The species and numbers of butterflies will be recorded to help track butterfly populations on the refuge.

It is recommended that volunteers wear comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and bring a reusable water bottle. To register, please contact Michelle Garcia at Michelle_Garcia@fws.gov or 515-994-3400.
