The Pella Community High School Jazz Band I took home 1st place honors in class 3A at the Iowa Jazz Championships on Tuesday, April 10th in Des Moines. This is the fifteenth state championship for the Pella jazz program and the first since 1998. The Iowa Jazz Championships are considered to be a unique event nationally due to the format and caliber of performances. The daytime competition hosted 60 of Iowa’s finest high school jazz bands in four classes. Pella Jazz Band I performed a twenty-minute program before a packed room and an outstanding panel of judges. Songs performed were: “Love for Sale” by Cole Porter and arranged by Alan Baylock, “Trail Mixx” by Mike Pendowski, “Sunset and the Mockingbird” by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, and “Ojos de Rojo” by Cedar Walton and arranged by Bob Washut.
At the afternoon award ceremony, Pella placed amongst the top two jazz bands in class 3A, qualifying them to compete in the prestigious evening finals at the Des Moines Civic Center. They finished the evening with their best performance of the year and were named State Champions. Other placing bands included: 2nd Place: Harlan, 3rd Place: Oskaloosa, 4th Place: Independence, 5th Place: Waverly-Shell Rock, 6th Place: MOC-Floyd Valley, 7th Place: Glenwood, 8th Place: Bishop Heelan.
Outstanding soloists for the band included: Tukker Bogaard - Trumpet, Sam Davis - Drumset, Sarah DeVries - Clarinet, Sean Miller - Trumpet, Connor Naaden – Trombone, and Sarah Van Maanen – Alto Sax
The Pella Jazz Band I’s next performance will be at the Carnaby Club show April 27th and 28th. The show will be held at the Pella Community High School starting at 7:30p.m. for both evenings.

Pella Christian High School concluded its Theatre Season with “Thieves’ Carnival. on March 22-23, at the Vermeer Auditorium at Pella Christian High School.
