Pella —
The Pella Community High School Jazz Band 1, under the direction of Ben Thompson, received 1st Place this past weekend at the SCIBA Jazz Festival. The festival was held in Norwalk on Saturday, December 8th. Pella Jazz Band 1 competed in class 3A, and was awarded top honors among 12 competing bands. Receiving outstanding soloist awards were Sean Miller-Trumpet, Connor Naaden-Trombone, Lucia Martisovitsova-Alto Saxophone, and Sarah DeVries-Clarinet. Other bands that placed in the top 5 include: Norwalk -2nd Place, Centerville-3rd Place, Winterset-4th Place, and Dallas Center-Grimes-5th Place.
By placing among the top two bands in class 3A, they have earned an invitation to compete at the Iowa Jazz Championships on April 18th, 2013. The Iowa Jazz Championships are a unique event that brings together 60 of Iowa's finest high school jazz ensembles (15 bands from each of the four IHSMA classes) to Des Moines for a great day of jazz. The event was founded by Iowa high school jazz educators over thirty years ago and continues to be an important event on the high school band landscape each year.
Pella Jazz Band 1 and Jazz Band II will perform next at the Iowa High School Music Association’s State Contest on Saturday, January 12th. The contest is being held at Pella High School.

Pella Christian High School concluded its Theatre Season with “Thieves’ Carnival. on March 22-23, at the Vermeer Auditorium at Pella Christian High School. The comedy included a cast of 20 students and 16 technicians and crew members. The production was directed by Marlo Van Peursem with Tech direction by Daryl Van Zee. (Photos by Kenn Krpan)
