Newness for Eagles

Programs will be needed to sort out the many new faces on the Pella Christian varsity girls’ track team this spring.

Coach Kevin Herdegen has a squad of 20 reporting to practice, of that group 12 are returning letter winners.

Herdegen points out that out of 20 young ladies, just five are juniors and seniors on the squad.

“It will take time for the team to gain confidence and experience,” Herdegen said.

“The strength of the team is that the girls have a lot of energy. We have a young team that is willing to try a variety of events. The girls are willing to work hard and make sacrifices that will pay off later,” the coach commented.

The list of letter winners includes seniors Madison Fopma and Jenna Fynaardt along with juniors Alec Breon, Leah Breon and Maria Eekhoff.

There are seven sophomore letter winners back on the 2013 roster. That list includes Julia Dykstra, Calise Gritters, Rebecca Gritters, Miranda Nikkel, Alyssa Starkey, Kendall Van Woerkom and Christa Veenstra.

The Eagles graduated five sprinters and a thrower off the 2012 squad and they scored a lot of the points for the team.

Herdegen replied, ”Replacing those who graduated will take some time.”

Jasmin Schelhaas captured four gold medals for PC at the conference meet last year winning the 100, 200, 400 and anchoring the winning 4x100 meter relay team.

PC was tied for fourth in the LHC Meet a year ago.

Madison Fopma returns as the LHC high jump champion.

Leah Breon returns as a member of the LHC winning 4x100 relay team.

Odds and Ends

The Eagles are set to open the season March 26 at the PCM Quadrangular slated to start at 5 p.m in Monroe.

The Little Hawkeye Conference Meet is set for Monday, April 29 in Oskaloosa.
