Eagles reach championship round at Pella Christian Invite

Pella — The Pella Christian Eagles were 3-0 in pool play Saturday at the Pella Christian Volleyball Invitational.

In the championship round the Eagles dropped two matches.

PC knocked off Gilbert 21-18, 21-15, Grandview Park Baptist 21-13, 21-17 and Martensdale-St. Mary’s 19-21, 21-18, 15-3 in the round robin pool play.

The three wins put PC into the championship round where they suffered setbacks to Des Moines Christian 25-23, 25-23 and to West Des Moines Valley 25-12, 25-23.

The Eagles’ record now stands at 10-12 for the season.

PC statistical leaders for the day in the match with Gilbert were Becca Gritters and Jora Vander Hart each with five kills. Lauren Jungling had 14 assists in the match while Vander Hart totaled 11 digs and Bri Warden added nine.

Logan De Graaf had three blocks as did Maddie Fopma in the Gilbert contest. Jungling also led in ace serves with three while Warden had two.

In the win over the MStM Blue Devils, PC had nine fills from Gritters and four each by Jungling and Fopma.

Jungling had 16 assists and Vander Hart seven. Warden led with 11 digs and Vander Hart had seven against Martensdale.

Jungling came up with five big ace serves while Tess Howerzyl finished with two.

In the Grandview match Warden and Howerzyl each had 10 digs. Jungling totaled 12 assists. Fopma led in skills with seven while Taylor Hartson topped the charts with three blocks. Vander Hart also had two ace serves.

In the championship round, Fopma had six kills and Gritters five against the D.M. Christian Lions. Jungling totaled 16 assists and Warden had 15 digs.

Fopma, Howerzyl and Vander Hart each had two ace serves for the Eagles.

In the contest with the Valley Tigers, PC was paced by Gritters with seven kills and Jungling with 15 assists.

The Eagles had just two ace serves against Valley and no blocks.

Up Next

The Eagles will play host to the Norwalk Warriors at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2.
