Howerzyl scampers for over 200 in loss to Mt. Ayr

Pella — The Mount Ayr Raiders were on the verge of blowing out the Pella Christian Eagles Friday night.

The Raiders led 26-0 at the half, but the Eagles bounced back with “Pride” and some determined football before falling to Mount Ayr 45-29.

The loss ended the PC regular season with a mark of 6-3 overall and 3-3 in the district. The Raiders, ranked No. 3, finished at 6-0 in the district and 9-0 overall.

The first half was all Mount Ayr. Quarterback Jason Sobotka scored on first half runs of 15, 1, 5 and 61 yards.

Not only did the Eagles manage a second half rally, but tailback Mason Howerzyl became the third back this year to gain over 200 yards in a game for Coach Rich Kacmarynski’s squad.

Howerzyl ran for 219 total yards on 30 carries.

Despite totaling over 200 yards rushing, Howerzyl had just one score that was a 61-yard jaunt early in the third quarter.

Derek Van Kooten accounted for three Eagle scores. He had a 27-yard touchdown pass from Coltin Collins and a 10-yard touchdown pass. Van Kooten also had a 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth to cap the scoring for the night.

Jacob Brouwer was 3-for-3 on PAT kicks.

The Numbers

Mount Ayr totaled 398 yards rushing and 138 passing for 536 yards of offense.

PC had 333 yards on the ground and 91 passing for a net offense of 424 yards.

Van Kooten finished with 82 yards rushing on 18 tries.

Collins was 6-of-17 passing for 91 yards and three touchdown passes.

Van Kooten had four receptions for 45 yards.

Sobotka led the Raiders with 224 yards rushing on 17 attempts.

Defensive tackle leaders for the Eagles were Mason Howerzyl with 10, Zach Rosendaal seven and Michael Mason and Zach Van Zee with six each.

Odds and Ends

Earlier this year Caleb Morgan had a 206 yard rushing effort against Lynnville-Sully and a 212 yard night against Des Moines Christian.

Derek Van Kooten totaled 214 rushing yards against Sigourney-Keota.

Michael Mason nearly had a 200 yard night on the ground for PC as he had 191 against Des Moines Christian.
