Pella —
The Pella Christian and Lynnville-Sully football game was a contest of neighbors facing off.
The schools are separated by a mere 15 miles and some of the families have relatives in the opposing town.
On the football field Friday night it was the Pella Christian Eagles, who were flying high over the Lynnville-Sully Hawks at the end of the night.
The Eagles soared to an opening night win by the final of 40-19 in a non district game hosted by L-S.
Coach Rich Kacmarynski’s PC squad started to break the game open right before intermission.
The Hawks had just cut PC’s 14-0 lead in half with a touchdown of their own with 3:25 left in the opening half.
PC answered the score with one of their own as Coltin Collins hit Riley Stursma on a 20-yard touchdown strike with 20 seconds remaining in the second quarter to put the score at 21-7.
PC received the opening kick in the second half and they eventually punted. A fumble on the next possession gave the Hawks the ball, but they returned the favor and fumbled as well.
On the Eagles’ third possession of the ball in the second half they capitalized by driving 15 yards in three plays. The touchdown was a 2-yard run by Caleb Morgan.
The Eagles scored the next two times they had the ball to build a 40-7 advantage with 11:47 left in the game.
The Hawks scored twice in the final 7:29 of the game to make the final 40-19.
Caleb Morgan had a big night for the Eagles. He rambled for 206 yards on 30 carries. Morgan ran for over 1,000 yards a year ago and he’s on the fast track to passing that magical number again this year.
Morgan scored on touchdown runs of 5, 2 and 41 yards.
Quarterback Coltin Collins added two touchdown passes for the Eagles. The first pass was for Michael Mason for six yards and the next score was a 20 yard pass to Riley Stursma.
The final PC score of the night was a 69 yard interception return by Blake Riggen.
Lynnville-Sully had a 1 yard touchdown scamper by quarterback Cale Van Wyk in the second quarter.
The Hawks’ defense accounted for the second score of the season as Caden Doll recovered a fumble in the end zone with 7:29 left in the game.
The final points of the night came on a 1 yard run by Daniel Zimmerman with 2:20 left.
Odds and Ends
PC amassed 391 yards of total offense, 309 came on the ground.
Morgan totaled 206 yards rushing while Michael Mason added 96 yards on the ground on 11 carries for PC.
Bailee Samson led the Hawks ground game with 149 yards on 10 carries.
L-S totaled 224 yards rushing and 47 passing for a net of 271 yards of offense.
Pella Christian had four turnovers in the game, three lost fumbles and one pass was picked off.
The Hawks had three turnovers, two lost fumbles and one pass intercepted.
Derek Van Kooten led the PC receivers with two catches for 24 yards and Mason hauled in two for 16 yards.
Jacob Brouwer made four of six PAT kicks for the Eagles.
Defensive tackle leaders for the Eagles were Zach Van Zee with nine, Riley Stursma seven, Morgan and Riggen with six each and Mason and Mason Howerzyl each with five.
Riggen intercepted one L-S pass while Michael Mason and Coltin Collins each had one fumble recovery for the Eagles.

The Eagles (1-0) will have their home opener Friday as they play host to the PCM Mustangs (1-1) in a varsity game that kicks at 7:30 p.m.
