Pella —
Pella Christian opened the varsity cross country season Saturday at the Pella High Invitational.
It gave PC Coach Jocelyn Meinders a first look at the squad against competition.
The competition was strong considering many of the top teams in the state were in both the varsity girls and boys’ races.
Dowling Catholic, the top team in Class 4A, won both varsity contests.
The Dowling boys’ totaled 18 points followed by Cedar Falls with 72, Johnston at 87 and Pella High at 104.
The Pella Christian varsity boys had 375 points for 13th place.
The Eagles were led by Jacob Lensing in 45th place in the 5K race at 18:50. Max Shannon was the next Eagle to finish at 20:02 in 68th.
Rounding out the PC scoring were Matt Spoelstra in 88th at 21:35 and Ryen van Vark 89th at 21:35 and Jonathan Beltman 90th at 21:40.
Also running for the Eagles but not counting in the team total was Craig Wilson in 93rd place at 21:57.
In JV boys’ action the Eagles’ Jackson Schelhaas was 11th at 21:44 and David Dykstra 200th at 26:21.
Girls
In the varsity girls’ race the Eagles were led by Marina Shannon in 73rd place at 19:14 and Damaris Worthington 82nd at 19:52.
Also competing for PC were Leah Breon in 85th at 21:33 and Kandace Breckenridge 95th at 22 minutes even.
PC didn’t have a fifth runner to post a varsity team total.
The Dowling girls had 21 points for the win followed by Waukee with 56 points, Cedar Falls at 69 and S.E.Polk at 144.
A total of 16 boys teams scored points and 13 girls squads.
In JV action the Eagles were paced by Kira Braun in 46th place at 19:53, Alicia Munoz 121st at 22:44 and Xu Yadi in 130th place at 23:26.
Coach Meinders stated, “There were really tough schools in the meet. The times we had posted were a good starting point and they were very respectable.”

The Eagles will run at the Johnston Invite today (Thursday) at 5:30.
