Pella took three buses full of runners tot the opening meet of the season at the Cedar Rapids Prairie Invitational Saturday.
The No. 2 ranked team in Class 3A, Pella High, won the boys’ varsity team title with 25 points.
Following behind the Dutch in a talented field of athletes was Fort Madison with 67 points, Mount Vernon-Lisbon in third with 73 and Solon fourth with 126.
Pella’s JV boys also won a team title at the Cedar Rapids opener with 25 points. Solon was a distant second with 79 and Marion was third with 95.
In varsity girls’ action the Lady Dutch are the No. 1 ranked team in Class 3A. The Lady Dutch were fifth at the Cedar Rapids opener with 98 points.
Solon won the varsity girls’ team tittle with 36 points followed by Fort Madison with 68, Mount Vernon-Lisbon was third with 89 and Cedar Rapids Xavier fourth at 97.
Pella’s freshman/sophomore boys’ also won a team title with 34 points followed by Monticello with 55in second place.
In the freshman/sophomore girls’ team competition the Dutch were fifth with 125 points. Cedar Rapids Xavier won with 40 points followed by Cascade with 64.
The Pella High varsity boys’ were so dominant in their race that six of the seven Dutch runners crossed the finish line among the top 10 in the 5K race.
Keegan Fitzsimmons was the fastest of all the Dutch athletes with a second place finish at 16:53. Evan Jones was third at 17:07 followed by Matthew Klein fourth at 17:37, Wade Pingel seventh at 17:45 and Michael Schemm ninth at 17:56 rounded out the varsity team total for the day.
Ryan Sievers was in 10th place for the Dutch in the varsity race at 18:00 and Michael Etnyre was 29th at 19:16.
Gabi Meirick was the leader for the Pella High Lady Dutch with a fifth place run in 16:32. Victoria Kleven was the next Pella runner to finish in 17:06 in 13th place.
Rounding out the Dutch varsity scoring for the day were Ashley Kirkland in 18th at 17:17, Abby Fyfe 29th at 17:45 and Sydney Swanson in 33rd at 18:06.
Also running for the PHS varsity girls’ team but not counting in the team total were Sally Ropes 37th at 18:37 and Lydia Van Ee 39th at 18:42.
Pella Coach Doug Cutler commented, “This was an excellent first step in our season. Most exciting from the coaching staff perspective is the amount of potential growth we foresee.”
The Dutch will be in action again Saturday for the Pella High Invite starting at 11 a.m. held at the Central College Course.
College action for the Central Invite will start at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
