The Pella Christian Eagles stand at 7-9 for the season in varsity volleyball action.
The Eagles knocked off the Newton Cardinals at home Tuesday, Sept. 11. The final score was 19-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-20.
In the win the Eagles had 17 kills from Becca Gritters, 13 by Madison Fopma and 12 by Jora Vander Hart.
Lauren Jungling ran the offense and had 34 assists.
Tessa Howerzyl sparked the PC defense with 29 digs followed by Daphni Yarkosky with 21 and Vander Hart with 17.
Logan De Graaf and Fopma each had five blocks while Gritters and Jungling were each in on four.
Jungling and Vander Hart each had three ace serves for the Eagles.
North Mahaska
The competition wasn’t quite as rugged for the Eagles at the North Mahaska Tournament as it has been in the first two tournaments of the year.
PC has played in the Ames Tournament as well as the Iowa City West Invite.
The Eagles won three of four varsity matches at North Mahaska. The set back was to the BGM Bears by the score of 21-19, 21-15.
PC managed to beat the Lynnville-Sully Hawks 21-11, 21-12, HLV, Victor 21-12, 21-8 and North Mahaska 21-8, 21-10.
Posting strong numbers for PC in the win over the North Mahaska Warhawks were Fopma with seven kills, Bri Warden with seven digs and Vander Hart six.
Jungling had four ace serves and Fopma added three.
The win over HLV saw PC paced by Howerzyl with 10 digs and Vander Hart with eight. Gritters led the Eagle hitters with six kills and Vander Hart added five.
Howerzyl had nine digs in the win over Lynnville-Sully while Fopma led in kills with six.
Vander Hart had six ace serves and Fopma four against the L-S Hawks.
In the one loss on the day the Eagles had nine kills from Gritters in the match against BGM. PC also had 15 assists from Lauren Jungling.
