The Pella High Little Dutch broke away from a close game with the Carlisle Wildcats at halftime last Friday evening to post a 35-7 Class 3A District 8 victory.
The Dutch, playing on the road, scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Pella’s win moved the record to 2-0 in district play and to 3-2 overall.
Daniel Langenfeld opened the scoring for Pella last Friday night in Carlisle with a 10-yard touchdown reception from Josh De Waard. Anthony Bentzinger tacked on the PAT for a 7-0 lead.
The Dutch scored again early in the second quarter for a 14-0 advantage on a one-yard dive into the end zone by Nathan Henry.
The Wildcats closed the deficit to 14-7 with 4:06 left in the half when Kichanh McMullen scored on a 10-yard run.
The third quarter was scoreless but the Dutch tacked on three more touchdowns in the fourth.
De Waard scored on a 3-yard run. Nathan Clayberg hauled in a 15-yard touchdown pass from Josh De Waard with 8:02 left in the game.
The final score of the night came on a 47-yard fumble recovery that was returned for a touchdown with 6:54 left in the contest.
Statistics
The Dutch won the battle of turnovers. Carlisle threw one pass interception and lost five of six fumbles on the night.
Pella had one pass picked off and lost two of three fumbles.
Each team had 14 first downs in the contest.
Pella totaled 243 yards rushing and 103 passing for 346 yards of offense.
Carlisle finished with 95 yards rushing and 40 passing for 135 yards of total offense.
Josh De Waard led a balanced rushing attack for Pella. He ran for 93 yards on 12 carries while Lukas Steenhoek added 91 yards on 13 attempts. Henry was next with 25 yards on seven attempts.
De Waard was 5-of-10 passing for 103 yards. Jacob Vollmar snagged two passes for 52 yards and Nathan Clayberg pulled in two for 41 yards.
The Pella defense came up big throughout the night. Vollmar had one pass interception for the Dutch.
Pella fumble recoveries were by Quinton Murphy, Josh Hileman, Brian Rundle and Chris Brogden.
Pella tackle leaders were Christan Stafford with eight and Noah Clayberg with seven.
Nathan Clayberg was in on five stops, Brandon Konfrst and Brian Rundle each had four tackles.
