Pella Dutch win big by blanking Chariton

Pella — A 35-0 win over Chariton Friday night made for a happy Homecoming for the Pella High Little Dutch.

The win propels the Dutch to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in Class 3A District 8.

Chariton slipped to 0-4 in district action and 1-5 for the season.

Pella Coach Jay McKinstrey worked on the passing game against the Chargers. Josh De Waard was 8-of-11 passing for 136 yards, two touchdowns and one pass interception.

The longest touchdown pass of the night was a 59-yard connection with senior Jacob Vollmar. Vollmar had four catches in the game for 108 yards total.

The other touchdown pass was 9-yards to Bryce Bortscheller.

De Waard was busy in the game as he also led the Dutch on the ground with 90 yards rushing on four carries, which produced two more Pella scores, the longest run was of 55-yards.

Pella’s special teams produced a score as well as sophomore Brian Rundle returned a Chariton punt 20 yards for a touchdown.

Anthony Bentzinger was perfect on the night, 5-of-5 on PAT kicks.

The Numbers

Lukas Steenhoek ran for 52 yards on seven carries for Pella and freshman Nathan Henry ran for 35 yards on eight attempts. Daniel Langenfeld added 13 yards on five rushing attempts.

In addition to posting the shutout, the Pella defense picked off two Chariton passes. The picks were by Vollmar and Chris Brogden.

Brogden returned his interception 37 yards before being tackled.

Pella defensive tackle leaders for the night were Christian Stafford with 12, Matt Nieuwsma seven, Cody De Kruyff and Garrett Jansen each with five.

Odds and Ends

After going 1-1 in August, the Dutch reeled off three straight district wins following a non-district loss to the No. 4 ranked Grinnell Tigers.
