Keokuk scores lone run to end PHS season

Pella — Pella suffered a very tough 1-0 defeat in the second round of Class 3A Regional Softball action last week.

Playing in Fairfield, the Dutch gave up a first inning run to Keokuk and nothing more. The problem was the Dutch weren’t able to score any runs against the Chiefs.Keokuk pitcher Hannah Washburn twirled a three-hit shutout at the Dutch. She struck out eight and walked just one in earning the victory.

Pella gave Keokuk, ranked No. 6 in the final 3A state polls, all they wanted before falling 1-0.Keokuk leadoff hitter Autumn Bowen hit a double in the first inning and scored on a hit off the bat of Mollie Martin.

Pella had trouble collecting hits as the Dutch finished the season with a brilliant mark of 20-10 overall. The season included the team tying Pella Christian for the Little Hawkeye Conference title.The only hits Pella managed in the game were a pair of singles by Lisa Houser and a single by Mackenzie Anthony.

Pella pitcher Mandy DeMeulenaere pitched well but took the loss despite allowing just six hits. DeMeulenaere fanned three in the seven inning affair.The victory improved Keokuk’s season record to 31-9 and put the Chiefs into the 3A Regional finals against Fort Madison.

Keokuk knocked off Fort Madison 8-4 to earn a trip to the state tournament in Fort Dodge.
